Speeders and Stop Sign Runners
Posted on Aug 11th, 2012
A special meeting of the DFNA (Dearborn Federation of Neighborhoods) was held on Aug 8 to discuss how we can work with the Dearborn Police to address traffic safety in our neighborhoods. The sargent in charge of the Traffic Safety Bureau was our speaker.
Thanks to all of you who sent me comments. The majority of these were concerning speeding through our neighborhood during morning rush hour. People traveling east on Cherry Hill cut through Dearborn Hills to avoid the light at Telegraph; they are typically speeding. This is in direct violation of the signs that area posted at most streets along Cherry Hill indicating that there is no right turn allowed 6-9am. This has been noted and officers will patrol around these times when they are able. These signs were placed as the result of a DHCA Traffic Committee which did a lot of work in the early 80's. (check back for scans of these archival documents)
Speeding in Dearborn Hills seems to be most problematic on Rockford, Marshall and Beechmont according to your comments.
I provided all of your comments (names removed) to the police. What you can do is call the police phone numbers provided in this article. The Dearborn Traffic Bureau will monitor speeds in various areas based on the number of reports they receive. They can collect data electronically on the number of cars and the speeds they are travelling.
A number of you asked about speed bumps. This is not allowed in neighborhoods as they impact emergency responders.
We also talked about another kind of traffic; bicycles. There were a number of participants who reported near-collisions with children on bicycles who were not obeying traffic laws. The DFNA membership feels that bicycle education and safety would be a good initiative for us to take on city-wide. This would go well with the Dearborn schools initiative to encourage children to walk and bike to school. Stay tuned for more on this topic.
