Dearborn judges reinstate traffic school program for reckless driving
March 7th, 2025
The City of Dearborn is
reiterating its call to young drivers to obey all traffic safety laws by announcing the return of driver improvement courses that may be ordered by Dearborn judges against reckless drivers, on top of fines and court costs. Dearborn judges may order drivers who appear in court for infractions to attend one or multiple sessions of the course, also known as traffic school.
Dearborn Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud stated, “We continually urge our young drivers to recognize their responsibility to keep themselves and others safe on our roads, and we are still seeing this epidemic continue. For those in need of relearning their responsibility, this traffic school will be made mandatory on top of fines and court fees.”
Drivers will have opportunities to learn traffic safety laws and practices, take part in quizzes, and may take part in activities such as visiting crashed vehicles and witnessing the aftermath of serious traffic collisions. All courses are taught by a qualified police instructor.
Chief Judge Sam Salamey stated, “In an effort to further enhance public safety and improve driving skills of drivers, in particular young, less-experienced drivers, the 19th District Court will in addition to assessing fines and costs order the respondents to attend one or multiple sessions of traffic schools depending on the nature of the offense and the particular respondent's driving record.”
The program is a joint collaboration between the 19th District Court and the Dearborn Police Department. More details about the special traffic school will be announced in the coming weeks.
